Alicia hurried back to the auditorium. Her shoulders relaxed when she saw Blake talking to some other doctors outside its entrance, and she waited. The door to the auditorium was ajar, and only a few people remained inside. It seemed the symposium was over.

He soon finished chatting with them and looked up. His face went blank at the sight of her. Blake walked toward her. Alicia waited with bated breath, but when he reached her, he strode right past her.

She reached out and grabbed his arm. “Blake, please wait.”

He stopped walking, but did not turn. “Not here,” he said in a cold voice. He strode toward one of the smaller conference rooms. Alicia struggled to keep up with his long quick strides. He opened the door, and they stepped in. The room was empty. He turned and faced her, his eyes expressionless. “What is it, Dr. Montgomery?”

Crap. She must have really hurt him for him to call her that and not Alicia.

“Dr. Hartwood told me what happened. Blake, I should have waited to hear what you had to say.”

Blake sighed and his shoulders relaxed a little. “You had every right to be mad. I’m sorry for not telling you ahead of time about the change in presentation. I got a call last night—after we parted ways—telling me about it, and that I had to keep the information secret, even from you.”

“Thanks for going to bat for me for both the cash award and the funding for Willow.”

“I wanted to make it up to you.” Blake reached out his hand and brushed a strand of her hair away from her face. “Why do you have such an effect on me?”

Alicia’s breath hitched. She didn’t know what to say to that. It seemed the temperature in the room had just ratcheted up. His touch sent tingles racing from her head to her toes. Alicia swallowed.

But she couldn’t afford to feel this way. The presentation was over, and there could be nothing between them. She tried to change the subject.

“I have to go see Willow.”

Alicia could tell Blake noticed what she’d done, but he didn’t press further.

“Can I come along?” he asked. “It would be great to meet her.”
